The concept of cold weather is always relative. Depending on where you live, “cold” temperatures could mean anything from below 60 degrees Fahrenheit to below 20. When it comes to power washing your home or place of business, though, the key temperature to keep in mind is 32 degrees Fahrenheit- the point at which water turns to ice.

However, 32 degrees Fahrenheit itself is not the only way to gauge if it’s too cold to perform a power washing service. The wind chill is a factor, too, and if the temperature is anywhere close to 32 degrees Fahrenheit, there’s a legitimate risk that the wind chill could bring down the temperature surrounding the power washing tools and the house to below the point of freezing- and that would have the same effect. To be on the safe side, and to protect both your house and our equipment, we don’t especially recommend having your house power washed in temperatures any less than 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

With that said, it still is theoretically possible to power wash your home in cold weather. Here are some of the risks to be aware of:

That means that, at almost exactly the same point at which water turns to ice, our chemical solution will freeze over. This can result in the solution freezing while it is sitting inside of the power washing tool- or worse, potentially while it’s actively doing its job of rinsing the dirt and grime off of your house, which in turn will cause more problems than it is supposed to be solving

One of the worst things that can happen when trying to power wash your home in cold weather is the freezing of the power washer itself . Luckily, there are steps you can take to help avoid this. But even with all the precautions and care we take, it’s possible that some of the solutions may run off the sides of your house and come into contact with your plants- and that’s not good, for a long list of reasons.

Luckily, we have procedures in place to make sure that any such contact between the chemical solution and your plants results in minimal, if any, damage. Try as we might keep the chemical solution away from your plants- and we do usually succeed in these efforts- it’s still a possibility. Therefore, we make the effort to give your plants three separate rounds of rinsing with pure water when we’re at your house, each time with a distinct purpose.

Round One: Before We Begin Powerwashing Your House

Before a drop of liquid even touches the side of your home, we make sure to give your plants a healthy dose of water. There is a multitude of reasons for doing this. To begin with, as is the case wi th most living beings, plants require water, and a certain level of hydration, in order to survive. Thus, they get thirsty from time to time . There’s a very good chance that they haven’t quenched that thirst in the time just before we arrive, so that’s the first thing we do. Conversely, simply watering your plants to keep them hydrated also means that the plants will not remain thirsty, and look for liquid- including the wrong kind of liquid. Such as, for example, a powerwashing chemical that can kill them. Plants don’t generally know which types of liquid are good for them and which ones are not, and if the first liquid that comes their way in a fair amount of time is harmful to them, they’ll soak it up just the same.

Round Two: While Powerwashing Solution Is Dwelling

After we’ve applied our powerwashing solution to your house, the chemicals need time to sit, or “dwell,” and do their jobs- and in the interim, we’ll wash your plants again. Ind eed, water is a major component to our powerwashing solution- in fact, it’s about 99% of it- but it’s only one piece of the chemical puzzle we use to give your house a thorough cleaning. 99% Water

It should come as no surprise that the main ingredient in our powerwashing cocktail is water. As everybody knows, when you need to clean something, you use water, the most abundant natural resource on our planet. By itself, water has a way of cleaning dirt, grime, and unwelcome plant life, as it washes the materials that aren’t supposed to be in a given spot away. Therefore, water makes up approximately 99% of the chemical solution we use to clean your houses.

.5% Sodium Hypochlorite

A fancy word for bleach, sodium hypochlorite is added to our power washing combination in small quantities. Because of the raw power bleach can have, infusing our chemical cleaning solution with more than .5% can have all kinds of negative consequences, such as killing plants in the yard as it runs off your house. As such, we have to find that perfect balance of using just enough sodium hypochlorite to clean any moss, mildew, algae, or any other plant life that’s not supposed to be on your roof- while at the same time, not using so much that it could kill plants that are supposed to be on your porch or yard. So when we say that half of one percent of our chemical cleaning solution is sodium hypochlorite, there’s not much wiggle room available; a powerwashing solution consisting of more than .75% of this bleach could potentially be problematic.

.5% Surfactant

Rounding out the list of ingredients in our powerwashing solution is a special surfactant , also known more simply as soap. As is the case with the bleach, not too high of a quantity of soap is needed to do the job of cleaning your house- because we use a high-quality soap that teams up with the bleach to erase any dirt from the sides of your house. The special soap we use is powerful enough that less of it is needed to clean a dirty wall with a lesser quantity of bleach- and helps the bleach do its job for a longer period of time. One of the many advantages to that is that in case of an excess runoff, where the solution trickles down to meet the pretty flowers in your front yard, the lower concentration of bleach in the solution has a lesser chance of doing harm to your plants.
